Plant-Based Diets, Meat Consumption, and Gut Health

When people start learning about biodiversity loss and the environmental pressures on food systems, a question that often comes up is whether everyone should become vegan. The reality is more nuanced than that. There are ethical arguments around animal welfare, environmental arguments around land use and resource consumption, and then there are the health considerations.
One of the biggest drivers of environmental pressure globally is the scale of meat production. Livestock farming uses enormous amounts of land. Large areas of forest — particularly in places like the Amazon — have been cleared to create space for cattle grazing or to grow crops such as soy that are then used to feed livestock. When you look at the numbers, livestock farming accounts for a huge proportion of global agricultural land use. This is where even small changes in dietary habits can make a meaningful difference. If populations reduced the amount of meat they consumed and replaced some of those meals with plant-based foods, it would significantly reduce the pressure placed on land, water, and ecosystems. This doesn’t mean everyone needs to eliminate animal foods entirely, but it does highlight how powerful dietary shifts can be when they happen across large populations.
There is also a strong health conversation happening around this topic. In the UK, bowel cancer has recently become one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in people under the age of 50. While many factors influence cancer risk, one of the most consistent dietary recommendations for gut health is increasing fibre intake. Vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds all provide fibres that support the gut microbiome and help maintain healthy digestion. These fibres act as fuel for beneficial gut bacteria. When bacteria ferment fibre, they produce compounds that support the gut lining and influence immune signalling. Diets that include a wide variety of plant foods are consistently associated with a more diverse microbiome and improved digestive health markers.
Of course, for people living with conditions like Crohn’s disease, the situation can be more complicated. During periods of inflammation certain fibres can be difficult to tolerate, and some people need to temporarily adjust the types of foods they eat. But the broader principle still holds true: diets that include a wider variety of plant foods tend to support both human health and environmental sustainability.
The goal isn’t necessarily strict ideology. It’s about recognising that eating more plants and slightly less meat can benefit both our bodies and the ecosystems we rely on.
